In this section, Riva del Sole offers a number of ideas to visit Follonica and its territory.
Follonica: not only hydraulic toll gates and Cala Violina
Follonica, the second city of the province by population, is approximately 22 km from Castiglione della Pescaia. Its history is inextricably linked to that of the Castello di Valli (or Di Valle) dating from 884 and whose ruins still dominate the Gulf and also boasts an Etruscan and Roman presence.
Follonica, in addition to offering the archaeological sites of Rondelli and Petraia Valley, the military architecture of the Castle already mentioned and of Castellaccia, the villas and private farms in antique and neoclassical style, the hydraulic toll gate of Follonica, Pecora Vecchia, Pratoranieri and of Casone, the natural areas of Bandita di Follonica, the interprovincial Park of Montioni, the Nature Reserve of Poggio Tre Cancelli and the Natural Reserve of Tomboli Follonica also offers numerous beautiful beaches which make it a suitable destination for both families and couples or groups of friends … not to mention those seeking relaxation and solitude!
The most important beaches of the area are Cala Violina (whose name comes from the sound that is produced by walking over its sand), a picturesque cove between Follonica and Scarlino which is enclosed between two headlands, and has a fine, white sand and water that is the most transparent you will ever see. Cala is not accessible by “motorised” means but there is a mountain bike rental service in the area. The pine forest behind the beach also has picnic tables.
Then there is Torre Mozza, a beautiful beach in the heart of the Gulf of Follonica dominated, in fact, by the Tower which was formerly used for defensive purposes. At one end of the beach, an ancient reappearing Roman road defines a “natural pool” that is truly characteristic.
Carbonifera – Pappasole is in the direction of the ancient Aurelia; the beach is reached by taking a wooden walkway that enters a pine forest. After 100 meters, you arrive at your destination: the beach is of white sand and its focal point is a cliff that is about 30 meters from the shore which, they say, is formed from the remains of the ancient Via Aurelia: here you can find all kinds of fish … so equip yourself with fins and mask!
Go ahead and choose the Residence Riva del Sole in Castiglione della Pescaia for your holiday in Tuscany by the sea!
